Our Ministries

II Cor. 9:10-12 (NIV)“Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.”

Listed below are some of the ministries of the church. You may also check out the Activities, Vacation Bible School, AWANA, and Women's Conference pages for more information about God's work being done by God's people.

Benevolence Ministry

Helping those in the community who have short-term emergency needs such as food, clothing, household furnishings and supplies, help with utility bills, etc. The benevolence ministry also maintains a food pantry and distributes food to families in need.

Homebound Ministry

Keith Roach and David Carter work with the outreach ministry for those who are homebound. Keith and David visit and deliver CDs of each Sunday’s services to those who are unable to attend services. The shut-in ministry was established at TVBC October 1, 2002, by Rev. John Perkins who was Interim Pastor at that time.  Keith Roach was asked to be director of the ministry, and accepted.

Next, visits were made in the community to see which individuals wanted to receive a copy of each Sunday’s message.  The ministry started with eleven individuals in the community.  According to Keith, “Each individual has a way of touching your life just as much as the message on the CD touches theirs.”

“I enjoy visiting with them very much. The smiles on their faces is enough reward for the time spent to go visit with them. Their outlook is great, and they touch the lives of all who come in contact with them.” David echoes Keith’s assertion that he receives more of a blessing than the persons he visits.

Puppet Ministry

A ministry using puppets to teach young children faith-based lessons. The puppet show is presented immediately prior to Sunday School each week. Each week the puppets present a Bible-based lesson to the children.

 Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Ministry

Jesus Christ showed special compassion for children (see Mark 10:13-16). In the ministry of Samaritan's Purse, we strive to follow His example. In countries around the world, our projects are providing needy children with food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education. Most important of all, these boys and girls experience the love of Jesus Christ.

WMU

The Thomas Village Women’s Missionary Union is committed to spreading God's love. One way we do this is by meeting human needs. We have developed several on-going ministries, each addressing a particular need. Some of these ministries include:

Great Commission Literacy Project—book giveaway at annual Duffield Days Celebration. Books are collected throughout the year and given out to children ages 2-12. Beginning in 2006 books and magazines were also collected and distributed to children, teenagers, and adults.

Moldova Orphanage Medical Mission—Christmas backpacks filled with clothing, personal care products, school supplies, etc., for residents of the orphanage.

Moldova Adult Care Facility--members of the church donate personal care packages to be distributed to members of the Moldova Adult Care Facility.

Christmas in August—members collect and distribute school supplies to needy children at Duffield Primary School at the beginning of each school year in August.

Give-a-Thon/Angel Tree Project—In partnership with Blanket Appalachia, Thomas Village Baptist Church distributed Angel Tree packages to 60 Duffield Primary School students this year. The Angel Tree packages contains clothing, school supplies, and a toy. Each child also receives a coat, a Bible, socks, toboggan, and gloves. Each child’s family receives a box of food provided by the WMU and members of the congregation, a blanket(s), and coat(s) for adults in the family who need one.

The Give-a-Thon provides our church with the opportunity to reach out and share our blessings with members of our community who may need a helping hand. Most important, it allows us to share the love of Jesus Christ.

Our Father who is the ultimate source of the physical food that sustains us is the same God who supplies the spiritual nourishment that enables believers to flourish and serve.

 Senior Outreach Ministry

A ministry dedicated to the TVBC senior membership. Although it is designed for those over 50, anyone may participate in the activities of the group. Many of the members have been heard to comment, “I can’t wait to be able to join the Seniors group.” It includes educational programs of special interest to seniors (CPR, How to Recognize a Stroke, Wills and Estate Planning, etc.), opportunities to attend cultural events in the immediate area, opportunities for travel to local attractions, an annual Seniors Christmas Fellowship Celebration, a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration, and other activities.

The seniors also have their very own ministry. Every Thursday a group of women of Thomas Village Baptist Church—The Sewing Bees—meet and use their skills to construct turbans for hospice patients, hand-sewn bears for hospice patients and hospitalized children, baby quilts for Ronald McDonald house, ouch pouches for breast cancer patients, quillows for the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center and the TVBC Shut-in participants, costumes for the church Christmas programs, and other needs as they arise. Others who cannot attend the Thursday sewing group work at home on crochet and sewing projects.

On November 13 they delivered items to the shut-ins, the Southwest Cancer Center, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia. The Sewing Bees invite anyone who is interested in helping—those who sew and those who don’t—to join us for sewing and fellowship each Thursday. You do not have to be a member of the church to participate. For more information, see Hazel Stanley or call the church at 431-4101.
